□ 6カ国語も話せる人はどうやって単語を覚えてるの？そのコツは？
Mr. Aratatsu: Where are you from?
あらたつ先生: どこ出身ですか？
Ms. Darsha: I am from India.
ダーシャ先生（ペンネーム）: インドです！
Mr. Aratatsu: Sounds great! I have been interested in why you can speak some languages and how do you learn them. What languages can you speak?
あらたつ先生: いいですね！なんで数ヶ国語も喋れて、どうやって勉強しているのかに興味があります。何ヶ国語話せますか？
Ms. Darsha: I can speak Hindi, English and 4 other regional Indian languages. India has more than 22 spoken languages.
ダーシャ先生: ヒンディー語と英語と後、インドの地域の4つ話せます。インドでは、話されている言葉が22個あります。
Mr. Aratatsu: What is your mother tongue?
あらたつ先生: 母語は何ですか？
Ms. Darsha: My mother tongue is Punjabi.
ダーシャ先生: パンジャブ語です。
Mr. Aratatsu: I have never heard about it. When did you start studying English?
あらたつ先生: 聞いたことないです。英語はいつから勉強始めたんですか？
Ms. Darsha: English is the first languages kids in India learn in school. I learnt the English alphabet before my own mother tongue. It's quite common.
ダーシャ先生: 英語は学校で学ぶ最初の言葉です。母語の前に英語のアルファベットから学びます。それが結構普通なんです。
Mr. Aratatsu: Really? Sounds interesting.
あらたつ先生: そうなんですか？面白いですね。
Ms. Darsha: Most Indians can speak more 3-4 languages.
ダーシャ先生: 多くのインド人が3〜4カ国語以上話せますよ。
Mr. Aratatsu: How did you increase your vocabularies? I think memorizing many words is very hard.
あらたつ先生: どうやってボキャブラリーを増やすんですか?たくさん言葉覚えるのは大変ですよね（汗）
Ms. Darsha: I have been reading since a very young age. I have always loved books! To be honest and a little personal, the smell of books is one of my favorite!
ダーシャ先生: とっても小さい頃から本を読んでいます。本がずっと大好きなんです。正直個人的なことなんですけど、本のにおいが好きなものの1つなんです！！
Mr. Aratatsu: Cool!
あらたつ先生: いいですね！
Ms. Darsha: We also used to converse in English in school. If a teacher caught us talking in another language, then we would get scolded.
ダーシャ先生: また、学校では英語で会話をしてました。もし先生が私たちが他の言葉で話しているのを見たら、叱られました！
Mr. Aratatsu: Really? Do you mean that students are forced to speak English at school?
あらたつ先生: そうなんですか？学校では英語を話すことを強制されたってことですか？
Ms. Darsha: They are not forced. They are encouraged. We learn all the subjects in English. Even math, Science, EVS are taught in English. India was ruled by the British for about 200 years, so we have a lot of Influence.
ダーシャ先生: 強制ではないですよ。使うように奨励されます。英語で全ての科目を学びます。例えば、数学、化学、EVSでさえ英語で教えられます。インドはおよそ200年間イギリスに支配されていたからたくさんの影響受けているんです。
Mr. Aratatsu: I see. What is EVS?
あらたつ先生: なるほど。EVSって何ですか？
Ms. Darsha: Environmental Sciences.
ダーシャ先生: 環境科学。
Mr. Aratatsu: I see. How do you increase vocabularies? Is there anything that you pay attention to?
あらたつ先生: なるほどですね。どうやってボキャブラリー(単語)を増やすんですか? 何か意識していることありますか？
Ms. Darsha: Well, I think to improve vocabulary, we need to be committed to it.
ダーシャ先生: えーっと、ボキャブラリーを磨くにはそれにコミットすることが必要ですね。
Mr. Aratatsu: Such as?
あらたつ先生: 例えばどんな感じですか？
Ms. Darsha: Whenever you come across a new word, note it down and learn it extensively. Discuss it with a teacher, use that word in a minimum of 3 sentences on that day. Also, reading poems helps a lot. Poems often use complex words and phrases, so learning them is a good way too.
ダーシャ先生: いつでも、新しい言葉に出会ったときは、それをノートに取って広げてそれを学びます。先生とそれを使ってディスカッションしたり、その日で最低でも3つのセンテンスを作ります。また詩をたくさん読むこともとても役立ちます。詩はしばしば複雑な言葉やフレーズを使っていて、それらを学ぶこともとても良いことだと思います。
Mr. Aratatsu: I will try to take your advice! What is the most important thing to study languages for you?
あらたつ先生: 試してみます！ダーシャ先生にとって言葉を勉強するのに1番重要なことは何だと思いますか？
Ms. Darsha: I have not learnt them consciously. I have lived in different states of India.
ダーシャ先生: それを意識して学んだことはないです。インドのさまざまな州に住んでいましたから。
Mr. Aratatsu: You have picked up some languages without learning consciously.
あらたつ先生: 意識することなしで言葉を学んだんですね。
Ms. Darsha: Yes. When we come across people with different cultures, we tend to pick up their languages and habits.
ダーシャ先生: そうですね。違う文化の人々と出くわすと、言葉や習慣を学べる傾向があります。
Mr. Aratatsu: Your life has been giving you some languages skills.
あらたつ先生: 日々の生活が言葉のスキルをくれたんですね。
Ms. Darsha: That's true!
ダーシャ先生: そうです
Mr. Aratatsu: Do you have any problems if you don’t use English in your daily life?
あらたつ先生: 日常生活で英語を使わなかったら何か問題はありますか？
Ms. Darsha: Possibly! I have never gone through a day without using it. It just comes naturally, we do not use it consciously.
ダーシャ先生: ありえますね！英語を使わない日を経験したことはないです。それはごく当然で、意識して使わないですね。
